Haussmann-Opera district - the elegance of the 19C. : Garnier Opera, Haussmann architecture, the jewellers on the Place Vendome, the Hotel palaces Ritz, The Westin and Le Meurice. The Louvre – in older times luxurious residence of the French kings, today biggest museum in the world – with the still contoversial glass pyramid, the little Arc de Triomphe and the royal gardens : the Tuileries. Place de la Concorde with the more than 3.300 years old egyptian obelisk. The Champs Elysées with Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe. The still unmissable Eiffel tower. The Invalids dome with it’s gold leaf cupola – Napoleon's mausoleum. The Seine river and its bridges. Latin Quarter : The dignified Sorbonne University for liberal arts. The Pantheon – mausoleum for famous philosophers, writers and scientists : Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie... The Luxembourg Gardens with Maria de Medici’s palace. St. Germain-des-Prés: intelligentsia, fine arts and luxury. Once the neighbourhood of the Jazz cellars, of philosophers and writers (Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Wilde...) nowadays more a neighborhood of haute couture and art galeries. Montmartre – first a vineyard then playground of painters: Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Picasso, Dali..., the Moulin Rouge and the painters’ village, just in back of the Sacré-Cœur church. (Daily)

VAUX-LE-VICOMTE CASTLE  Fouquet’s castle from the 17C, inspired by Palladio, admired and envied by Louis XIV. Two hours visit of the castle and its most beautiful gardens. (Daily)

During summer season the castle opens every Saturday evening for a candlelight visit :  over 2000 candles are lit throughout the château and the gardens. Absolutely fabulous! (Only Saturday at 7 p.m.)  

 

 

FONTAINEBLEAU CASTLE     Built in the early 16C by King François I, this castle became after the French Revolution the favorite place of Napoleon. You’ll find paintings, furniture, tapisteries from the 16th century until Napoleon’s times. UNESCO World Heritage.  (Castle closed on Tuesday)

CHANTILLY CASTLE    This exquisite water-castle is a MUST  for  everybody who loves ancient paintings, from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Chantilly with more than 1000 paintings has the second most important collection in France after the Louvre. (Castle closed on Tuesday)

NORMANDY D-DAY BEACHES   Utah/Omaha/Gold/Juno/Sword: A voyage back to the battle fields 1944. Pointe du Hoc, American cemetery and memorial, Mulberry Harbour and Museum of Arromanches, fully equipped german guns batteries. Possible visits of the Memorial in Caen or the famous tapestry in Bayeux, showing on a 70m / 203ft long woolen brodery the conquest of England in 1066 by the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror.

BRUGES  «  The Venice of the North » got it’s city charter in 1128. Surrounded by a ring of canals this belgian town is the best preserved example of medieval Flanders. Fascinating meeting of the Middle-Ages and the 19C neo-gothic style. Have a drink on the Grote Market, be inspired by great northern architecture, visit the numerous churches (romanesque or gothic period), have a boat ride around the channels, au plaisir !
